Coaching vs Therapy/Counseling
Coaching is specifically goal or action driven whether it's working towards a promotion at work, educational, spiritual, relational, leadership or business goals. It is not typically a covered medical insurance benefit because coaches are not licensed to provide medical/mental health services. Sometimes employers pay for coaching if they feel it will benefit their organization. Talk to your employer about possible assistance options available. Coaching is highly effective for clients that are motivated for change but unsure how to go about it, need direction, or would like accountability.
Therapy is also goal oriented but in a clinical setting that provides additional support/strategies surrounding past and current issues or illnesses that are impacting a client negatively. This includes depression, anxiety, trauma, attachment issues and any mental illness. Therapy is provided by a licensed clinician and is accountable to the state they practice in. Therapy is frequently covered by behavioral health sevices through medical benefits.
