At the Heart is a 501(c)3 non profit counseling and training center that Andrea and David Peterson founded in 2018 for those that have difficulty accessing mental health services. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Andrea had so many requests for services that she was frequently having to turn away children, adults and families that were emotionally hurting simply because she didn't have room in her practice practice. Many people are falling through the cracks in our society for many reasons such as financial limitations, lack of access to care, and little or no medical insurance.
At the Heart is a community counseling center whose goal is to bridge the gap and to help heal our community, families and individuals. All members of our community need respect and acceptance. At the Heart provides affordable individual, couples , group and family counseling as well as psychoeducation for our community. At the Heart provides various services based on a sliding scale determined by household income and services requested. We have daytime, evening and Saturday appointments available.
Our counselors provide a caring and non-judgmental environment for clients to get the support and encouragement they need, when they need it. We provide both Traditional/secular counseling and Christian based counseling, determined by a client's preference. We meet our client's where they are at and work collaboratively to help each client achieve their individual goals.
We have several different kinds of providers. We have our Professional Division which involves Trainees, Associates/Interns, Pastors and Coaches. Trainees are Graduate/Doctoral school students that are in the field of counseling that need to acquire hours towards graduation and licensure. Associate and Interns are Post-Masters/Doctorate Graduates that are accruing hours towards licensure in Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work or Professional Clinical Counseling. Our Coaches are Certifed through a Coaching Program such as John Maxwell and can assist with life, spritiual or professional coaching.
We have a Peer or Lay Counseling Division which is an every day person that is passionate and has a heart for helping others, life experience, and has completed a 13 week counseling course through At the Heart that addresses: depression, trauma, anxiety, suicidality, grief/loss, child abuse, domestic viiolence, addiction, and mindfulness. These providers could be nurses, teachers, stay at home parents, retirees, and so on. They have an open heart and willingness to listen and encourage.
All of our counseling staff receive weekly case consultation and supervision by a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist that has special training in supervising non-licensed clincians. Be assured, you will be provided with quality care and support. It is a team approach.
If you are interested in these services please fill out the contact form, email [email protected] or call 916-292-8732 indicating your interest in At the Heart services where someone will follow up with you to answer questions or schedule an appointment.

We truly look forward to hearing from you!

DonationsWe are in need of financial donations in order to provide low cost services to our community. Healthy individuals= healthy community. As we grow, we will need additional support like furniture, therapeutic toys and games, computer, printers and office supplies. Currently, there are no paid employees. Everyone is working as a volunteer so all donations go directly to office space and supplies that support our client base and training for our staff.
Our goal is to never turn away anyone asking for help due to an inability to pay. To verify our charity with the State of CA click here Tax ID# 83-2809559 Please send donations to: At the Heart 2378 Maritime Dr. Suite 100 Elk Grove, CA 95758 916-292-8732 |

Counseling Skills Workshop At the Heart Counseling Skills Workshop is a 13 week program that meets once a week for 2.5-3 hours and is taught by a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. This course covers a wide variety of mental health topics that are impacting our friends, family members and community. Some of these topics include addiction, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, boundaries, suicide/crisis, child abuse, domestic violence, listening skills, mindfulness, mandated reporting and others. This course is a great tool for those on the front line that interface with people in a work or volunteer capacity such as pastors, leadership, community volunteers, teachers, human resources, coaches, and anyone interacting with human beings. Each class within the course is a different topic and builds on the previous week's topic. For each class you will receive a copy of the weekly powerpoint, psychotherapy tools and resources. At the end of the program when you have completed all 13 classes, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. If you are unable to participate in all 13 classes during your cohort, you are welcome to participate in the next scheduled round of classes and make up the ones you have missed. Please use the contact form to inquire or register for the 13 week training, hosting a training and costs. We look forward to hearing from you! The next cohort is starting in August 2020.
